"I-I'm afraid; I do not understand —Ahh!" I fell to my side into the mist, vise-like claws ripping and gouging at my insides. "Please, dearest Lady, grant me mercy—for my ignorance!"

My most loyal will instruct you in the way of the bannik. Do well to mind their teachings.

Bannik? The guardians of springs and bania, Russian bathhouses? But before I could beg for understanding, I was once again shackled and fettered and whisked away into a whiteness I could not identify.

Chapter Six

We had ridden for days, plodding through marsh and field with no sighting of Ivis. No amount of tracking skills could follow him through this ever-changing swamp.

I pushed off the tree I'd been resting against, waded to my horse, and began removing his heavy gear. "These waters will be the death of us all."

"You shouldn't do that. He will be unrecognizable as Nevsky and the people of these lands will claim him. Will you find approval in your father's eyes by losing one of his finest roans?"

Was my father's favored sick from the sun? "I care not to uphold my cursed lineage or defend it. We are no longer on Nevsky land. I have nothing to prove."

Bartlet scoffed as he readjusted my horse's bridle. "Unless it is to your advantage to do so."

"I bandy only the power behind the name." I met Bartlet's gaze. "When you refuse to listen, for instance."

I'd spoken in jest, but that did not lessen the remorse I felt for using that power when Ivis had pushed me. "I hold many regrets . . . using my clan's name in anger, among them."

He touched my arm, a touch I'd come to know well in the days and nights we'd wandered these lands. "You are weary. That is all. The horse needs to remain dressed, despite your concern or his fatigue. It's his only—"

His touch or my need, one or both, brought me to him, and I kissed him, drinking in the unmistakable power of the water. Stealing what I had days before let go.

I closed my eyes into the kiss, and a familiar face came to mind. "Ivis."

No. Reluctantly, I pulled away.

"Sefton, no."

"I cannot continue this way when I miss him so."

"No. Do not leave me just yet. Stay for a while longer."

It did not matter that he had the power I craved, that which I needed to stay strong. I could never forget Ivis. I made my way around my horse, checking his gear.

"Wait!" Bartlet grabbed me, rougher, startling me this time. "You do not understand." One finger pressed tight to his lips. "Shh . . . ." He motioned toward the trees with his eyes. "Go!"

Sodden leather boots only hindered my steps, and I trudged through the knee-high muck more than ran. Shouts filled the air behind me, but I obeyed my Bartlet's order, "Do not look back. Head for the trees! Do not look—!"

Every hair on my body stood on end, but with two steps to freedom, I whirled on our attackers, only to find Bartlet slicing the air with his dagger.
